October 2021 Update

Ingrid Has been very busy creating these last few months. Below, you will see new work: transparent layered canvases, abstracts and commissions. All of them have the unique and subtle elements that continue to make her work so intriguing.

Timeless Royalty

In October 2019, Ingrid’s most avid patron and art collector commissioned her to do a monumental portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. He and his wife are anglophiles and frequent visitors to England. They wanted a piece that symbolized not just the queen’s life, but also her influence on generations of people across two centuries. It was a difficult task and Ingrid had to dig deep into her creative source. The piece took nearly 18 months and was completed on April 21st, the queen’s 95th and just 12 days after Prince Philip’s passing.  A sad and sweet coincidence.

The collectors are very pleased with their new work and were kind enough to allow us to share an image of the work here. We hope you will find it as inspiring as they do.

Winds of Change

Winds of Change 48 x 76, Acrylic, Collage and Resin on Canvas

All of Ingrid’s works incorporate abstract elements, usually the initial layer is an abstract form. Several years ago, she decided to explore the ideas hidden in her layered work. The results have been beautiful abstract works alive with a unique and vibrant energy all their own. They have been well received and many clients have multiple pieces.

Layered Work

Ingrid is often asked to describe her artwork. Labels are like boxes, they confine and define something that, in this case, is fluid. She combines so many differing genres and materials into a single work that it is difficult to describe simply. For example, the main image is usually Renaissance or Baroque, then she adds collage that is reminiscent of the early 20th century. Abstract treatments throughout the work are influenced by contemporary and post war art. And all this is incorporated using 21st Century industrial materials such as Acrylic, Resin and bonded aluminum. So rather than pigeon-hole her work, we’ve decided to simply show the most recent pieces in a slideshow format and let the viewer decide – enjoy!

Recent New Abstracts

Ingrid’s abstract work continues to evolve. In the slideshow below, you will get a sense of how her layered work influences her abstracts and vice versa. Several of the works have embedded objects or sculptural elements projecting from the canvas. This added dimension blurs the line between painting and sculpture.

Houston Exhibition Preview

Once Upon a Timeless opens in Houston, TX, Friday, April 22 at the Unix Gallery

Ingrid has reached into the creative unknown to produce her most exciting work to date.  It has always been her goal to paint the human spirit in her work, to capture that spark or essence that is the nobility in each of us.  Using three related techniques in this unusual exhibition, Ingrid brushes the beauty within each of us.  Though it is difficult to capture the true depth and dimensionality of her work in photographs, here for your viewing pleasure are a few samples of the masterpieces you will see at the exhibition.

Toscas-Lost-Love-52x38
Tosca’s Lost Love 52 x 38

Ingrid continues to create her most well-known work, consisting of transparent layers, antique objects and butterflies.  Stunningly beautiful images that touch the divine in each of us.

Never content to stand still, Ingrid experiments with new materials in this recent series of dimensional work.  The objects literally jump from the surface.

Abstraction has always been a critical part of Ingrid’s work, sometime layered deep within her figurative work, or gently applied to the transparent surfaces.  Her show in Houston will be the first time these paintings will be shown as separate and unique work.

The featured work this year will be Ingrid’s masterpiece, Cherished Memories of Cornell’s Lost Muse.  As the title suggests, the work is an homage to Joseph Cornell.  Ingrid reached deep into her psyche to create a work of not only sublime beauty, but intense emotion.  The central figure is the young Queen Isabella of Austria surrounded by her dreamlike memories.  The antique objects seem to hover, frozen in time, as the princess looks out through her dream at the viewer, questioning, wondering whether time exists at all, and who after all, is the dreamer.

Art Miami opens on Tuesday, December 2nd and continues through Sunday, December 7th.

In Depth Look at Newest Creation by Ingrid Dee Magidson

Ingrid’s newest piece, Eternity’s Doorway is one of her most experimental.  In it, she adds a number of objects inside and outside the piece that give the work a highly dimensional feel as well as giving it sculptural elements.

Eternity's Doorway
Eternity’s Doorway

Even though some of the objects are quite large, they are subtle, almost unseen.  For example, under the the face is a skull.  The photograph obscures it somewhat, but it comes and goes as the viewer walks around the art.  Not in a haunting way, but as a glimpse to something deeper.

Ingrid also put various object on the outside of the art to give it sculptural details:

Eternity’s Doorway is ultimately about the connection we all have with eternity, from a timeless soul to objects which fade.  Even our own body will eventually disappear, but the deeper reality of existence transcends time, perhaps even our memories, or the memory of us.

It is the detail and subtlety which make us who we are; and so it is with Ingrid’s art.

Book by Ingrid Dee Magidson, Madness of the Muses
Madness of the Muses

From the back cover:

Ingrid Dee Magidson’s art career began just over six years ago.  In that brief time, she has had 15 solo exhibitions (most of those sellout shows), a museum exhibition, her work included twice at the Hermitage Museum Foundation Gala in New York City, numerous magazine features and a loyal international group of art collectors which include: the Alpina Gstaad,  Antonio Banderas, Melanie Griffith and Jackie Bezos.  The Madness of the Muses is a richly illustrated look at the life and work of this rising art star.  Magidson’s unique style combines the poetic paintings of the Renaissance with contemporary and antique materials to form works of sublime beauty.  Each piece is imbued with a sense of spirit, as if time has stopped and we are looking at people long gone, but brought back to life in Magidson’s extraordinary work.  One collector describes his experience:

It is as if the artist has compressed 500 years into a single work of art.  These few fragile layers of antique objects, paint and butterflies are arranged in such a way that  I can see into the very depths of a stranger’s soul.  I begin to pull away, but I can’t stop looking.

Here are a few glimpses inside of the book:

Video Update and New Work by Ingrid Dee Magidson

The holidays are a busy time for everyone.  Ingrid reminds us also to do what is important.  Somehow with children, family and guests, she was able to fit in time in the studio.  Two incredible pieces are the result: “The Angels’ Guardian” and “Gaia.”

A Closer Look at The Traveler by Ingrid Dee Magidson

Ingrid recently completed this exceptional work entitled, The Traveler.  It is quite beautiful and deserves a closer look.

The Traveler by Ingrid Dee Magidson
“The Traveler” by Ingrid Dee Magidson

The subject is from a 17th Century portrait of a young boy who would later grow up to be king.  Innocence pervades this young monarch as he looks to the future.  Ingrid wanted to bring him back to our time in her art, so she placed the world within his reach – all the various modes of transportation, maps, a compass and other objects for his journey.  Below you can see a detail of the map and compass.  These are actual objects in the art and give us a clue as to the actual depth of the piece (almost 4 inches).  Photography tends to flatten Ingrid’s work and unless you can see the work in person it is difficult to understand this important aspect of her technique.

Moving to the bottom of the piece, we see a detail of the prince’s hand laying on his helmet, which gives us a different understanding of “The Traveler.”  Perhaps you noticed the toy car on the prince’s his belt.  It symbolizes his link to his childhood even as he is busy becoming a king, reaching into his own  future.  Music penetrates the boy’s hand, one could even say his hand is made of musical notes.  As in so many of Ingrid’s works, this signifies the importance of culture and beauty.

Next we come to a close up of the prince’s face.  We are immediately captivated by his eyes, a young man’s eyes looking out to the voyages ahead, maybe even through time to us.  Resting at the outermost layer, they signify a reach beyond his own world.  Deeper and below this, we see lines of latitude and longitude, symbols of travel, reminders of those voyages already taken and those to come.  Beyond the boy’s face we see layers of music and maps, wisps of clouds, symbolizing life itself, potential, and the unknown.
