October 2021 Update

Ingrid Has been very busy creating these last few months. Below, you will see new work: transparent layered canvases, abstracts and commissions. All of them have the unique and subtle elements that continue to make her work so intriguing.

Timeless Royalty

In October 2019, Ingrid’s most avid patron and art collector commissioned her to do a monumental portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. He and his wife are anglophiles and frequent visitors to England. They wanted a piece that symbolized not just the queen’s life, but also her influence on generations of people across two centuries. It was a difficult task and Ingrid had to dig deep into her creative source. The piece took nearly 18 months and was completed on April 21st, the queen’s 95th and just 12 days after Prince Philip’s passing.  A sad and sweet coincidence.

The collectors are very pleased with their new work and were kind enough to allow us to share an image of the work here. We hope you will find it as inspiring as they do.

Winds of Change

Winds of Change 48 x 76, Acrylic, Collage and Resin on Canvas

All of Ingrid’s works incorporate abstract elements, usually the initial layer is an abstract form. Several years ago, she decided to explore the ideas hidden in her layered work. The results have been beautiful abstract works alive with a unique and vibrant energy all their own. They have been well received and many clients have multiple pieces.

Layered Work

Ingrid is often asked to describe her artwork. Labels are like boxes, they confine and define something that, in this case, is fluid. She combines so many differing genres and materials into a single work that it is difficult to describe simply. For example, the main image is usually Renaissance or Baroque, then she adds collage that is reminiscent of the early 20th century. Abstract treatments throughout the work are influenced by contemporary and post war art. And all this is incorporated using 21st Century industrial materials such as Acrylic, Resin and bonded aluminum. So rather than pigeon-hole her work, we’ve decided to simply show the most recent pieces in a slideshow format and let the viewer decide – enjoy!

Recent New Abstracts

Ingrid’s abstract work continues to evolve. In the slideshow below, you will get a sense of how her layered work influences her abstracts and vice versa. Several of the works have embedded objects or sculptural elements projecting from the canvas. This added dimension blurs the line between painting and sculpture.

The Permanence of Art in an Impermanent World

Virtual Reality has some kinks to be worked out, while Twitter, Facebook, Digital Art and Flash Mobs are here now.  They quickly pique our interest, but are gone as quickly, replaced by the next post, video or event.  Our world has become a fast moving assault of images, opinions and ideas.  We react quickly, often with extreme passion, only to move on to the next event or visual crisis within minutes or even seconds.

This is completely new and alien to the human condition.  Is this good for us?  Time will have to decide.  But what it does do, is help us appreciate the few permanent things in our life.  We take vacations at a tropical beach precisely because it is difficult to be reached by phone or Internet.  We want time to not only decompress, but allow our minds to rest from the barrage of images.

Art Can be That Permanence We so Desperately Seek

When you collect a beloved work of art and hang it on your wall (or visit a work at a museum), there is a relationship that occurs.  It is deeply personal.  You don’t need to explain it unless you want to.  You can simply be with your experience.  It is rare and extraordinarily human.

Mankind has Created Art for Thousands of Years

Human beings have created art far longer than recorded history.  We have some beautiful examples preserved in caves in France and Spain dating back as far as 40,000 years.  It is likely it goes back even further, just that the art hasn’t survived.  We know why in the deepest essence of our beings.  Art is the language of conceptualization.  A single look and we take in a whole world of ideas that crosses the boundaries of time and space.  Twenty-first Century man, with all his electronic gadgets, can absolutely connect with his non-technical or “primitive” counterpart 40,000 years ago.  All he has to do is look.

We are Hungry for Something to Linger Over

Modern society in its weird and anti-human way discourages this experience.  We are expected to move on from image to image like hyperactive children, while deep in our psyche we crave the peaceful interaction of a single object to linger over.  The solution is to find a work of art you love, pull up a chair and contemplate infinity in its depth.  Think of it as a vacation for the spirit.

Ingrid Magidson Exhibition – Vail Opening March 27 and 28

Galerie Zuger in Vail, Colorado will be hosting the work of Ingrid Dee Magidson with two opening receptions on Friday, March 27th and Saturday, March 28th.  The artist will be in attendance from 3 to 7 pm on both evenings.

Ingrid will be showing her most experimental work to date.  That is saying a lot from an artist who continues to challenge herself with both materials and their use.  Consider the work below titled, “My Canvas.”  In this relatively small work Ingrid has created a visual reflection of sculptural objects beyond the bounds of the frame.  Inside the work (not easily seen here) are elements of the girl’s life in a kind of visual diary.  The overall effect is hauntingly beautiful.

Ingrid Featured on the Cover of Professional Artist Magazine

Cover December Professional Artist magazine
Professional Artist – December 2012 – January 2013

Congratulations to Ingrid.  Her piece, “Strength and Honor” is featured on the cover of the December/January issue of Professional Artist Magazine.  Ingrid is one of five artists interviewed for an article about mothers who are also artists and how they balance their family lives and careers.  My favorite quote from the article is when Ingrid is asked why she is in an artist.  She says, “I remind myself everyday that I have been given a gift, and it is my purpose, and it is my responsibility, and its my obligation to fulfill it and to give it back.”

Documentary of Ingrid Magidson’s Work Wins 2012 Telly Award

Congratulations to The Reid Effect of Pioria, AZ for their recent award of a Silver Telly (highest honor) for “Windows Through Time” a documentary of Ingrid Dee Magidson’s art work.

Rob Reid came to the studio of Ingrid Dee Magidson in Colorado in the fall of 2010 to record and interview Ingrid and Jay Magidson.  He and his film crew were on site for three days filming and interviewing the artist and her husband.  It was a unique experience to say the least.  Rob is a consummate professional.  He has a way of making you feel at ease even in the most difficult shots.  For example, Ingrid was retelling the story of her youth, about particular difficulties that ultimately led her to a life of art.  At one point, she was overwhelmed with emotion and was unable to continue.  Rob respected the emotion and the moment.  He never hurried her or tried to move on, he simply waited, “when you’re ready, we’ll continue.”

Filming moved into Ingrid’s studio.  This was not an easy place to shoot.  It is very crowded and the light is difficult.  Ingrid’s work has many reflective surfaces that make it very difficult to photograph.  Rob and his crew moved in without a complaint, setting up lights and reflectors and in no time they were filming.  Take a look at the final minutes of the film, it shows some very creative shots that Rob came up with where Ingrid is on the other side of the art.

Thank you Rob and congratulations on your much deserved award.

Ingrid Begins with Forre Gallery in Aspen

It’s official.  Ingrid is now showing with Forre Floria Gallery in Aspen.  Gallery owner, Ania Forre was at Ingrid’s studio today to look at Ingrid’s newest work.  Ingrid and Ania discussed many things, not least of which, was getting Ingrid’s work into the gallery as soon as possible.

Aspen has a lot of personal importance to Ingrid and her work.  Her first one-person exhibition was in Aspen in 2007.  That extraordinary show sold out within hours of arriving in the gallery – a full 3 days before the official opening of the exhibition.  Aspen was the home to her and her husband’s gallery for 18 years as well.  There are a lot of loyal collectors who will welcome the addition of Ingrid’s work in the expansive Forre Floria Gallery.

Earlier this year, well-known and respected gallery owner, David Floria joined forces with the Forre Gallery (the name changed from Forre Gallery to Forre Floria Gallery).  Ingrid had a one person exhibition with David in 2010, which was also an unqualified success.   David has been a long time friend of Ingrid and Jay, and we are happy he has added his wealth of talent and knowledge to this outstanding gallery.  Thank you David and Ania.  Ingrid is grateful to be showing in your beautiful gallery.
